Slots are the most popular casino games. In live casinos, more floor space is reserved for them than for table games, poker and sportsbooks combined. When you visit legal online casinos in Michigan, slots outnumber all the other game types.

You will find many classic live slots at online casinos. Games including Cleopatra, Quick Hits and Dragon Spin have all been adapted for casino apps. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to your playing options. Software houses including NetEnt and IGT create thousands of online-only slot titles. Many have progressive jackpots, multiple bonus features and impressive designs.

This page has you covered for slots in Michigan that you can enjoy for real money or to play for free. Below you will find information on the live slot casinos, plus the best places to enjoy online slot bonuses and rewards.

Online vs. live slots in Michigan

There is a lot of overlap between the list of slots you find in brick-and-mortar casinos and online. Software houses which have slots at online casinos in Michigan include some of the biggest names in the industry. You will find titles from SG Interactive, IGT, Konami and WMS.

Online slots have been available around the world for decades. The industry has boomed, with the biggest software houses creating some impressive and innovative titles.

Online casinos are not tied to a single source of games. Instead, they license the slots from different studios. The result is no two Michigan casinos will have exactly the same list of games.

Here are some of the best-known live slots which you can play online in Michigan:

  • Cleopatra: IGT created the original ancient Egypt-themed slot, which went on to become a series of games. Voice-overs, multiplier wild symbols and solid gameplay still make the original Cleopatra slots enjoyable today.
  • Buffalo: This Aristocrat slot features American wildlife. It started a series of games that are among the most popular titles in live casinos around the country. The original uses all-ways wins, has free spins which can be easily retriggered, and can pay huge prizes when you combine the buffalo symbols with sunset wild multipliers.
  • Wonder Woman: This game from Bally is an example of the many slots themed around TV and movie franchises which are now available online. Check out the free-spins bonus, where you can choose which symbol you want to dominate the reels.
  • Dragon Spin: Bally also created this game. It is themed on Asian dragons and has graphics and animations which are beautifully produced. With three free-spins features and a progressive jackpot picks game, there is plenty to keep you entertained while you enjoy the spectacular dragon sequences.

This is a very small sampling of games when it comes to what you’ll find online. Look out for Michigan online casinos that feature exclusive games.

Free online slots at Michigan online casinos

A big advantage of online casinos compared to the live venues is you can check out the slots for free.

There are two different ways to do this:

  1. Take advantage of no-deposit bonuses
  2. Play slots in demo and free-play modes

No-deposit bonuses are offered by many online casinos. These are designed to encourage signups and give the casinos a chance to showcase their platform and games. For players, you get between $10 and $35 for free to try the slots. If you get lucky, you might turn this into a big bankroll.

You can try out the slot games in demo mode at most casinos. With so many titles to choose from, this is a great way to find a game that works for you before you play for real money.

Note that your ‘play money’ balance will not be saved between sessions. Many casinos will list their most popular slots in a separate tab or screen. Some will let you search through their lists by game type, the number of win-lines, jackpot availability or by the software studio that created them.

Real money slot games in Michigan

You no longer need to travel to a casino to enjoy real money slots in Michigan. Online casinos offer these via the browser of your computer — or via apps for your mobile devices.

Better still, you can play real money slots with the houses’ money when you take advantage of online casino bonus money. For new players, this comes in three main formats. There are the no-deposit and free-play deals you get simply for signing up. There are matched welcome bonuses, some of which are large. You will also find no-lose and rebate deals, which are also linked to your first deposit.

Keep in mind that bonuses for real money slot play have playthrough or wagering requirements. This is the number of times you need to play your bonus money before it moves from your bonus balance into your cash account.

To take advantage of the biggest real money slot bonuses, you will need to make a deposit. This is safe at Michigan casinos. Many of the banking methods already in use for online purchases and bill payments can be used to fund your casino account.

These include credit or debit cards,PayPal (or similar eWallets), eChecks, Bill Pay and PayNearMe. If you head to the cage of the license-holding casino, you will also be able to deposit and withdraw in cash.

Once your account is funded and your bonus is claimed, you will have the chance to play thousands of real money slots. These range from online versions of live classics, to innovative and entertaining games designed by online casino software producers.

Sweepstakes casinos

An alternative way to enjoy online slots is to visit sweepstakes casinos. These are national sites, which use sweepstakes contest rules to offer casino-style gaming. Their slots are unique, colorful and many have progressive jackpots.

You will not be able to buy chips directly at casinos like Chumba Casino, FunzPoints and Luckyland Slots. Instead, you buy play-money chips and are given free sweeps cash or premium points to play the ‘real money’ games with. These sites are legal in Michigan and in most other states.

Michigan slots with progressive jackpots

A big factor in the popularity of slots is progressive jackpots. These prizes keep on increasing until they are won. There are many jackpots linked between different games, and even between casinos. The biggest jackpots are $1 million+, with progressive jackpots at $10,000 or more common.

Many online slots have progressive jackpots. IGT links jackpots together at online casinos, sharing them between different games under the MegaJackpots brand. Software houses, including NetEnt, offer their own progressive jackpot games for their online slot titles.

Jackpots will increase the volatility of wins on a slot. The long-term returns can be the same — for example, 95%. However, a slot with a $1 million jackpot would pay less to the majority of players to balance out the big prize for the lucky few. A slot without a jackpot would have more regular wins by comparison.

Always check the rules of a slot with a jackpot before you play. Some games will require you to bet the maximum amount (or above a specified amount) to be eligible for the big prize.

Many slots have the potential for huge prizes without having progressive jackpots. Wins can be triggered by the top symbols or through bonus features.

Different types of slots

Many of the latest slots defy simple categorization. These are immersive media experiences, with 3D graphics, surround sound and cinema-quality animations. The number and type of bonus games, features and individualized reel setups also keep slot games fresh and interesting.

Early slots were electro-mechanical. They had three reels, and often a single win-line. Some had bonus games, though on the whole, lining up bar symbols, 7s or cherries was the goal. Video slots removed the mechanical components. The early versions had nine win-lines. These games, including Cleopatra, Texas Tea and Lobstermania, introduced second-screen bonus games for the first time.

Live casinos still have a selection of mechanical slots, though the majority are now video-based. There are many with movie, TV, and band tie-ins. You can enjoy Elvis slots, or those themed on the Walking Dead TV show, alongside the classic Irish luck, history, and wildlife-themed titles.

With so many types of slots available, it should come as no surprise that the largest online casinos in Michigan have hundreds to choose from. Online games include titles that emulate the curved reels of mechanical games. There are also slot titles — for example, StarBurst from NetEnt — designed especially with smartphone gaming in mind.

Taking advantage of rewards

There are loyalty rewards to take advantage of for both live slots and online ones.

Live casinos offer comp schemes based on loyalty cards. An example is the Club Metro at Motor City Casino. You put your card into slots when you play them, earning points based on your coin-in. Those points are not affected by whether you win or lose. You can then exchange the points for resort credit, free play bonuses or, with some schemes, hotel stays.

Online casinos also have loyalty programs. These are designed to reward regular players, increasing brand loyalty. Make sure you take advantage of the welcome bonuses (no-deposit, matched and no-lose offers). After those have gone, comparing the one-off and standing promotions, loyalty rewards and specials including tournament entries or reloads can help you find the best deals.

Rewards programs at online casinos are tiered. You will climb through levels based on the value of your play. As you hit each level, the bonuses, and rewards available to you increase. By the time you hit the highest level, you will receive customized bonuses from a dedicated host.

An important factor to check for is the acceleration in the number of points you earn. Many casinos let you collect them faster as you climb tiers, giving you a better shot at reaching the higher levels and receiving bigger rewards.

Are real money slots legal in Michigan?

Online casinos, including slots, table games and live dealer casinos, are 100% legal and regulated in Michigan. Act H4311, passed in 2019 and signed into law that year by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Dec. 20. This bill set up a framework for online gambling regulation and licensing. This covers casino games and poker. Separate concurrent bills introduced sports betting and expanded lottery gaming.

The initial licenses are available to the commercial and tribal casinos. These venues began partnering with online brands immediately to develop their products. The first online casinos could go live as early as late-2020. To legally gamble online in Michigan, you must be 21 years old or above. Online casino apps will not work outside of state borders and if there is any doubt about your location, they will prevent you from playing.

Slots are legal in live casinos in Michigan. Unlike in other states, tribal casinos are permitted to offer Class III slots. In 1996, a resolution was passed adding three commercial casinos in the Detroit area.

Can I own a physical slot machine in Michigan?

You need to be 25 years old or above to own a slot machine in Michigan. This is for private use only as you are not allowed to allow others to gamble for real money without a license.

Are online casinos legal in Michigan?

Online casinos are legal in the Wolverine State thanks to the Lawful Internet Gaming Act. HB 4311 deems internet casinos, online poker, and daily fantasy sports legal.

This legislation sailed through both the State House and Senate. However, Gov. Gretchen Whitner was initially reluctant to sign.

She expressed concerns that internet gambling could cannibalize online lottery sales, which provide almost $1 billion annually to Michigan’s public school fund.

However, proponents won Whitmer over by imposing between a 20% and 28% tax rate on operators. She signed HB 4311 into law on December 20, 2019.

When will Michigan online casinos launch?

Gaming sites have officially been legal in the Wolverine State since December 2019. The regulatory framework and rules for the market aren’t in place yet, though.

Even when regulations are set, online casinos will need additional time to launch and work out potential kinks. We can’t provide an exact date on which Michigan online casinos will go live.

The MGCB estimates that gaming sites could launch as early as late fall 2020. Given that fall ends on December 21, the MGCB’s guess puts the market going live as early as November or December.

Of course, this estimation represents the best-case scenario. Gaming sites may not actually become available until early 2021.

Furthermore, not every internet casino will launch right after the MGCB gives approval. Some may wait several months or longer before they feel comfortable unveiling their casinos.

What MI online casinos will be available?

Before speculating on launch dates for specific internet casinos, we’d like to discuss which brands will be available in Michigan.

What online casino games will Michigan offer?

Michigan is sure to feature a wide range of internet casino games that span from slots to table games. Below, you can see the main types of games to expect in this market.

Michigan online slots

Slots will no doubt rule Michigan’s online gaming market. They’re by far more popular than any other internet casino game.

Slots give developers a wide range of options regarding themes, formats, and bonuses. Therefore, Michigan will boast many types of online slots.

Here are the unique types of slots that will definitely be available in the Wolverine State.

  • Three-reel: Although fewer in number today, these classic slots are still available in online casinos.
  • Five-reel: Five-reel games are the most common type of slots in the industry.
  • Bonus: These games offer unique bonus rounds that spice up the gameplay.
  • Megaways: A Megaways slot provides a random number of winning “ways” on each spin.
  • Grid: These slots feature a grid (e.g., 7x7) and cluster payouts, where matching symbols just need to touch to deliver wins.
  • Progressive jackpot: These games take a small percentage of each bet to fund a progressive jackpot.

Michigan online blackjack

Blackjack has ruled the American table game scene for decades. It’ll assuredly be popular in Michigan’s internet gaming market, too.

Every MI gaming site is set to offer multiple variations of this classic game. Some of the likely variations include:

  • Blackjack Xchange
  • Blackjack: First Person
  • Blackjack Pro
  • Multi-hand blackjack
  • Premium Blackjack Pro
  • Unlimited Blackjack

Michigan online roulette

Roulette is another highly popular online table game. Michigan gaming sites are likely to feature roulette in multiple variants.

The two main variations are American and European roulette:

  • American roulette: 38 numbers on the wheel; zero and double-zero pockets; 5.26% house edge
  • European roulette: 37 numbers on the wheel; zero pocket; 2.70% house edge

As you can see, European roulette is the more desirable option. Its 2.70% house advantage is among the lowest in casinos.

Other Michigan online roulette games will likely offer the same basic structure as American and/or European roulette. They’ll only differ by featuring option side bets.

Table games

MI internet casinos are set to provide a variety of table games beyond blackjack and roulette. Here are likely online table games that’ll be available in Michigan:

  • Caribbean stud
  • Casino hold’em
  • Let It Ride
  • Mississippi stud
  • Pai Gow poker
  • Three-card poker
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em

Depending on the individual casino, craps may or may not be available in Michigan’s market. For whatever reason, only a small percentage of gaming sites offer craps.

Live dealer casino games

Live dealer gaming allows you to enjoy authentic brick-and-mortar gambling through a smartphone.

Michigan will assuredly feature live casino games at some point.

As seen with other states, internet casinos initially only launch with slots and virtual table games. They wait for months or even years before adding live gaming to the mix.

Whenever live dealer games do roll out, Evolution Gaming will be the premier provider. This studio has already inked deals with BetMGM and PointsBet well in advance of launch.

Video poker

Video poker has been a staple in Michigan land-based casinos for years. It’ll also be one of the featured game categories at Michigan online casinos.

Video poker is just five-card draw poker. However, MI gaming sites are set to roll out multiplier video poker variations.

Here are the likely online variants that’ll be available in Michigan:

  • Bonus Poker
  • Deuces Wild
  • Double Bonus Poker
  • Double Double Bonus Poker
  • Jacks or Better
  • Joker poker
  • Triple Double Bonus Poker

  • 7-Eleven: Purchase a voucher from a nearby 7-Eleven and use it to deposit online.
  • ACH (e-check): Send an e-check from your linked bank account to an online casino.

  • Play+ card: Prepaid cards that are available through each online casino.
  • Visa and Mastercard: Use one of these credit cards to instantly fund your account.

Using Michigan casino apps

Smartphones have become the primary online gambling devices across the world. Therefore, many Michigan internet casinos will feature Android and/or iOS apps.
