Roulette Bets - What are some of the different roulette bets that can be made? How does betting play into an overall successful roulette strategy? If you play European or French Roulette, then you will find there are some additional bets added to the game as to what you will find on the American Roulette game. We will cover those in this article too, so you will be well prepared for any version of Roulette that you want to play.

Outside Bets

So we will start off by teaching you about the outside bets on a Roulette table. These are the bets located outside of the numbers on the layout. Here is a breakdown of the different outside bets you will find on a Roulette table:

Even money bets:

These bets pay even money (if you bet £10 and win, then you will be paid £10), and they offer slightly less than a 50% chance of winning. The percentage is reduced, as if the ball lands on Zero (and Double Zero on the American game), then you will lose all of these even money bets. If you are playing the European game, then you will only lose half of your bet, so the odds are much better for you if you are playing these bets if you play the European version.

• Red/Black – You bet on the ball landing on a Red or a Black number
• Odd/Even – You bet on the ball landing on an Odd or Even number
• High/Low – You bet on the ball landing on a High (19 to 36) or Low (1 to 18) number

2 to 1 bets:

These bets pay 2 to 1 if they win. So if you bet £10 on one of these bets and it wins, you will receive £20 back. If the ball lands on zero (and double zero on the American game), then all of these bets lose.

• Dozens – You can bet on any of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd dozens
• Columns – You can bet on any of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd columns

Inside Numbers

Now we will have a look at the different bets you will find on all of the ‘inside numbers’. These are the 0 to 36 numbers.

Six Line Bet – Pays 5/1

This bet covers six different numbers

Basket Bet – Pays 6/1

This bet covers 0 (and 00 on American Roulette), 1,2 and 3

Corner Bet – Pays 8/1

This bet covers four different numbers

Street Bet – Pays 11/1

This bet covers three different numbers

Split Bet – Pays 17/1

This bet covers two different numbers

Straight up bet – Pays 35/1

This bet covers one number only

Section bets / Neighbour bets (both AKA Call bets)

*These bets are only found on the European and French Roulette games, you will not find them on the American Roulette game. We have a more detailed article on all of these bets here, but this will give you a basic overview of what these bets are and how they work.

Section bets:

On the French and European Roulette wheel, the numbers are configured differently to the American wheel. The French and European wheel is broken down into three different sections, as follows:

Neighbour bets:

A neighbour bet is where a player can call any of the 0 to 36 numbers on the wheel “and the neighbours”. The ‘neighbours’ refers to the two numbers either side of the number called.
An example of this, would be “3 and the neighbours”, and this would refer to the following numbers:

12, 35, 3, 26, 0

So all of these are the many different bets on a Roulette you will find. The best way to actually learn these bets is to start playing the game, and see just how each one works.

Below you will find a simple table that lists the payouts for roulette. For each bet type we have listed how many numbers are covered and the payout you will receive if the bet wins.

Quick info about the payout column – With the payout column, we have listed the numbers going off the assumption that you’re placing a £1 bet. For example, if you place a £1 bet on Red, you will get £2 back. Obviously the payouts will alter when the amount you bet is changed, for example, a £5 bet on red will mean a payout of £10 if you win.

One thing that stands out straight away about the above table is that as you cover more numbers with each bet type, the payout is less. For example, betting on odd numbers (just less than half of the numbers on a roulette wheel) pays out just £2 when you place a £1 bet whereas a straight up bet pays out £36 for a £1 bet.

The Call Bets

You may have noticed that the Call bets are not mentioned in the table above. That’s because the Call bets are made up of multiple bet types combined, for example, Voisins Du Zero is made of of Split, Street and Corner bets but the payout ratios remain the same. In other words, wherever the ball lands, the regular amount is paid out regardless of the combination of bets.
